Former bishop wants kids to know our Christian heritage

The former Bishop of Rochester is calling for schools to explain the role of Christianity in forming the Britain we know today. In an article in Standpoint magazine, Michael Nazir-Ali welcomed the Education Secretary’s decision to reverse the UK’s ‘collective amnesia’ about our Christian roots, and made his own case for better teaching on the subject. He said knowledge of the faith was vital to understanding British history and culture. He pointed out the biblical foundations of the abolition of the slave trade, universal education, and improvements in healthcare and working conditions. Nazir-Ali also warned that the freedoms we take for granted are under threat unless we can recover ‘our spiritual and moral identity’. The former bishop is now President of Oxtrad – an organisation working for religious freedom.
