Scottish Election 2011 Manifesto Briefing

SCPO Briefing 13-3: Scottish Election 2011 Manifesto Briefing

On 5 May 2011 voters will go to the polls to elect their MSPs, decisions which will determine the shape of the next Scottish Parliament. In light of the Churches’ commitments and priorities, this briefing highlights key manifesto commitments of a range of Scottish parties; both to help voters in their decision making and also to signpost the key areas of political debate and activity for the coming years. To find a list of all the candidates in your constituency along with the results from the last Scottish Election visit the BBC website and enter your postcode.

The briefing focuses on the 5 parties which were represented in the recently dissolved Scottish Parliament: Scottish Conservative Party, Scottish Green Party, Scottish Labour Party, Scottish Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party (SNP). Also covered are manifesto commitments from a range of smaller parties which are standing in all 8 Regional Lists and have a clear manifesto covering issues of interest to the Churches. Parties covered are: Scottish Christian Party (SCP), UK Independence Party (UKIP), All Scotland Pensioners Party / Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party (SSCUP), and the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP). A full list of parties standing in the Scottish Elections, and a list of independent candidates, is available from the Churches Vote website.

In writing this briefing SCPO staff read over 325 pages of manifesto pledges – so please remember that this briefing is a digest and is not comprehensive! Links to all of the manifestos covered are provided at the end of the briefing paper. Any quotations used in this briefing are taken from the relevant manifestos.
