Faith and Politics after Christendom

This book by Jonathan Bartley is one that all Christians should study.

After a thorough review of the history of church and state, Christendom and Post-Christendom and where we are now, he has important challenges for those who would follow Christ. Churches he says will focus less on gaining power over levers of control an more on subverting power and the systems through which it is exercised. 'Drawing on the idea of the powers that lie behind systems, institutions and governments, the church will involve itself in identifying, examining and exposing the idols of the political system. If idolatry is defined as that which demands our worship apart from God, contemporary idols include - 'the national interest', the nation state, consumerism, militarism, individualism, marriage and the family, choice, power, the environment, prosperity and wealth'. (p220)

He has some interesting things to say about elections too!
