Changing the Banks -RBS and the environment

'The government now has a controlling interest in a number of banks. We recommend that the Treasury examine and report on how some form of environmental criteria for the investment strategies pursued by these banks...and what impacts this might have on UK sustainable development objectives."

- House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee

Event: Breaking the bank

The Camp for Climate Action is a grassroots movement taking direct action against the root causes of climate change. This year they are focussing on the Royal Bank of Scotland. They say: "In 2009 RBS were bailed out with £50 billion of public money. This bank is one of the world's largest investor in oil, gas and coal. From tar sands extraction in Canada to coal infrastructure here in the UK, we're paying to trash our future. These projects are not just causing catastrophic climate change, but destroying the lives and livelihoods of people across the globe. Ecological destruction is built into the mechanics of the financial system, with communities disenfranchised from their own futures."
From 21-24 August 2010, in Edinburgh, people from across Britain will be converging to highlight alternative policies and perspectives. For more information go to www.climatecamp.org.uk and read the World Development Movement's prospectus on cleaning up the banks bailed-out by the taxpayer.
